Quantum 3 Self-Fit vs Monimoto 9 and Monimoto 7

You park the bike outside overnight and you want to know the moment someone moves it. A Monimoto and our Quantum 3 Self-Fit will both do that. Both run on batteries, so there is no wiring: you hide it or fit it yourself and carry on riding. The difference is what stands behind the alert.

Monimoto costs less, on day one and over three years, and we would rather say that plainly. What the extra money buys with us is a Thatcham S7 approval and a monitoring team that rings you when an armed bike moves.

Levels of protection

Thatcham gives trackers a category, and that category is what your insurer looks at. This is how we line up the trackers on this page.

LevelWhat it meansWhere the products sit
1. Thatcham S5Our top tracker level: tracking and recovery after a theft, with round-the-clock monitoring and a rider tag.Datatool Stealth S5
2. Thatcham S7A Thatcham approved stolen vehicle location tracker, in a wire-free battery unit.Quantum 3 Self-Fit and Quantum 3
3. No Thatcham category statedA tracker whose maker names no Thatcham category on its website.Monimoto 9 and Monimoto 7

The Quantum 3 Self-Fit sits a rung above a tracker with no stated category, and the Stealth S5 sits a rung above that. Our guide to what Thatcham S5 and S7 mean goes through the categories in full.

How we worked out the totals

  • Quantum 3 Self-Fit: £249.99 + £119 = £368.99 after a year, and £249.99 + £309 = £558.99 after three.
  • Monimoto 9: £149.00 + £39 = £188.00 after a year, and £149.00 + 3 x £39 = £266.00 after three.
  • Monimoto 7: £109.00 + £39 = £148.00 after a year, and £109.00 + 3 x £39 = £226.00 after three.

We counted a full £39 for every year, though Monimoto gives the first two months free, so its first year may come out a little lower. Replacement batteries are left out for all three trackers. On these numbers the Quantum 3 Self-Fit costs £180.99 more than the Monimoto 9 after one year and £292.99 more after three.

When Monimoto is the right call

If your insurer does not ask for an approved device and you want the lowest running cost, buy the Monimoto. There is nothing to fit, Monimoto describes it as quick to move between vehicles, and the fee is £39 a year. The Monimoto 9 rings your phone when it detects movement.

When the Quantum 3 Self-Fit is the right call

Pick ours when the Thatcham category matters to you. You get S7 approval to put in front of your insurer, a monitoring team that rings you when an armed bike moves, an IP68 rated unit and arming schedules in the app. The battery and check-in settings are explained in our Quantum 3 battery GPS tracker guide.

If you also want a radio layer

For a bike that goes into vans, lock-ups and basement car parks, Quantum 3 with Scorpion VHF+ adds a VHF radio (RF) layer to the Quantum 3. It is launching in the UK, self fit and wire-free, and it costs £269.99. With the £119 one year plan that is £388.99, which is £200.99 more than the Monimoto 9 after a year; as the bundle with three years of monitoring included it is £578.99, or £312.99 more after three. See RF and VHF motorcycle tracking for how the layer works.

The step up: Stealth S5

If you want the top rung, the Stealth S5 is £359.00 and the price covers installation at a location of your choice on the UK mainland. It is a Thatcham S5 tracker, watched 24/7/365 by our vehicle recovery specialists, and it works with a rider tag. That is £478.00 after one year (£359 + £119) and £668.00 after three (£359 + £309), with no fitting to arrange. Compare the whole range on our motorcycle trackers page.

Before you buy

Ask your insurer which Thatcham categories it accepts. Our page on whether you need a Thatcham tracker for motorbike insurance gives you the questions, and why trackers have a monthly fee explains the subscription. Setup help is on the support page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Quantum 3 Self-Fit cheaper than a Monimoto?

No. The Monimoto 9 comes to £188.00 after one year and £266.00 after three, against £368.99 and £558.99 for the Quantum 3 Self-Fit. Monimoto is the lower-cost option. The extra money with us buys a Thatcham S7 approval, our monitoring team and the Datatool app.

Is Monimoto Thatcham approved?

Monimoto’s website does not state a Thatcham category for the Monimoto 9 or the Monimoto 7. It does publish an insurance offer with Bikesure, subject to insurer and scheme. Ask Monimoto and your insurer what they accept for your bike.

Is the Quantum 3 Self-Fit insurance approved?

It is a Thatcham Category S7 approved tracker, and UK insurers recognise Thatcham approved devices. Fit it exactly as the Quantum 3 instruction guide says and the S7 approval stays valid. Each insurer sets its own terms, so confirm with yours.

How does the Quantum 3 Self-Fit alert me?

You arm it from the app, or set a schedule and let it arm itself. If the bike moves while it is armed, our monitoring team phones you to check it is safe. You also get a location at the start of a trip, five minutes in and at the end.

How long does the battery last?

The Quantum 3 can run for three years before the batteries need replacing, and your settings decide where in that range you land. Monimoto states up to 12 months per charge for the Monimoto 9 and up to 24 months for the Monimoto 7.

Do I fit the Quantum 3 Self-Fit myself?

Yes, it is made to be fitted by you, in minutes. When you register it you send a photo of the install, and we check it before activation. If you would rather have a professional do it, the standard Quantum 3 is installed by a Datatool Approved Installer with installation included.

What is the step up from the Quantum 3 Self-Fit?

The Stealth S5. It costs £359 with installation included, carries a Thatcham S5 approval, comes with 24/7/365 monitoring and uses a rider tag. With the £309 three year plan it comes to £668 over three years.

Can I get a radio (RF) layer with a Datatool tracker?

Yes, at launch. Quantum 3 with Scorpion VHF+ is the self-fit battery tracker with a VHF radio layer added, at £269.99 (£578.99 with three years of monitoring included), and a VHF+ beacon can sit beside a Stealth S5. The VHF+ network is launching in the UK, and you can register your interest.
